COE renewal calculator

When your COE runs out, renewing feels cheaper than buying new. But renewing also gives up the rebate you would collect by deregistering. See what renewing actually costs you each year, counting that rebate, for a 5-year and a 10-year renewal.

Your cost to keep the car

Per year

Cost to keep your car: $13,000 a year on a 10-year renewal, $16,000 a year on a 5-year renewal.

Cost to keep, 10-year renewal

$13,000 /yr

The PQP you pay plus the $30,000 rebate you give up, spread over 10 years

Cost to keep, 5-year renewal

$16,000 /yr

$3,000 a year more than the 10-year

Rebate you give up

$30,000

Collected only if you deregister instead

Upfront to renew 10 years

$100,000

Full PQP

Upfront to renew 5 years

$50,000

Half the PQP

Renewing is not just the PQP. By renewing you also give up the $30,000 you would collect by deregistering at expiry. A 5-year renewal costs more per year than a 10-year one, because you give up the same rebate over half the years.

These are the costs to keep the car, before road tax (which adds a 10% to 50% age surcharge past 10 years), insurance, repairs and inspection, and they assume you keep it to the end of the renewed COE. A private sale today may fetch more than the LTA rebate. Rules on repeat 5-year renewals vary by COE category, so check LTA. road tax calculator.

Renew, or let it go?

At the end of a 10-year COE you can deregister the car and collect its deregistration value (the PARF rebate plus any unused COE), or pay the Prevailing Quota Premium (PQP) to renew for another 5 or 10 years. A 5-year renewal costs half the PQP, a 10-year renewal the full PQP.

The catch most people miss: renewing forfeits that deregistration rebate. So the cost to keep the car is the PQP you pay plus the rebate you give up, spread over the years you renew for. A 5-year renewal looks cheaper because the upfront is half, but it costs more per year, because you give up the same rebate over fewer years.

Renewing can still be the right call: a renewed car avoids the fresh ARF and COE you would pay on a new car, and you keep a car you know. This tool just makes the number visible so the choice is yours, not the salesperson's.

Figures are the cost to keep the car only. They exclude road tax (which carries a 10% to 50% age surcharge once a car passes 10 years), insurance, maintenance and inspection, and assume you keep the car until the renewed COE expires. A private sale today may fetch more than the LTA rebate floor. Rules on repeat 5-year renewals vary by COE category; confirm your PQP and renewal options with LTA.
